Welcome Week

Exciting activities and time-honored traditions

From CultureFest, which is your opportunity to start finding your people, to Traditions and Spirit of IU, where you will get to see first-hand what Big Ten athletics are like and get a feel for what it is like to be a Hoosier, Welcome Week has something for everyone.

Welcome Week events will help you explore the campus, meet new people, and connect to resources. Enjoy large-scale and small-group activities, get to know your academic department, explore different cultures, learn the IU fight song, and attend open houses—all planned to help you transition to campus.

Welcome Week starts Wednesday, August 18, and second-year students are welcomed and encouraged to participate in Welcome Week events. Find the schedule by logging in to the IU Mobile app. Moving in before August 18? Check the schedule for pre-Welcome Week activities too!

Freshman Induction Ceremony

Events kick off with the Induction Ceremony on August 18. All new students and their families are invited to attend for an official welcome and introduction to the IU community.

A tradition on the Bloomington campus since 1933, the Induction Ceremony serves as the official start to Welcome Week and a bookend to IU Commencement. Families are invited to attend the ceremony as their Hoosier is inducted into the IU academic community. The event will also be livestreamed for family members unable to be on campus. The ceremony includes an introduction of the entering class, their commitment to The Indiana Promise, and the presentation of the IU alma mater, “Hail to Old IU.”

Sarah K'La Washington

I came to IU not knowing if I would make any friends, or if I truly belonged, but that all changed once I experienced Welcome Week. Welcome Week helped me learn how to create a community, and the importance of interacting with my peers. It has been one of my most rewarding experiences and it has set the roadmap for my success here at IU.
