New Student Orientation

Your Hoosier Experience starts here

Congratulations on earning admission to Indiana University Bloomington! Your New Student Orientation experience will provide you with opportunities to meet other Hoosiers, learn about being a student at Indiana University, and work with an academic advisor to register for classes.

Whether this is your first year in college or you are transferring to Indiana University, we want you to be as ready as possible for your first year here, so all components of orientation —both online and in-person—are required for all new students. And parents and family, we didn’t forget about you. We have orientation sessions just for you during our programs and offer resources within these pages that will help you during this journey too.

Your New Student Orientation Journey

Orientation follows the steps outlined below. Orientation is required of all new undergraduate students and it includes online modules and in-person sessions.

During orientation, students register for their first semester of class. Students will also have an opportunity to learn about resources, opportunities, traditions, student life, and connect with other students and staff.

1. Start

Start with your orientation reservation and FYE Checklist within the Orientation Portal. This step includes signing up for your program dates.

2. Prepare

Prepare with the required New Student Orientation Canvas site and placement exams. You must complete these prior to your academic advising appointment during orientation.

3. Attend

Attend your orientation sessions including your advising meeting, student group meeting, and informational sessions about campus and student life.

Fees

A non-refundable First Year Experience and Orientation fee, set by the Indiana University Board of Trustees, covers costs for New Student Orientation, Welcome Week, and FYE services and programs throughout your first year. This fee will be assessed on your first IU tuition bill after you complete orientation. You do not need to pay it up front, but you are responsible for the fee once you make your orientation reservation.

Students admitted for summer or fall:

New undergraduate student: $218
New undergraduate transfer: $196
New international undergraduate student: $242
New international undergraduate transfer: $220

Students admitted for spring:

New undergraduate student: $163
New undergraduate transfer: $141
New international undergraduate student: $187
New international undergraduate transfer: $165

The FYE/Orientation fee does not include housing costs related to orientation. Lodging options, including both on- and off-campus options, will be included in your orientation reservation, confirmation, and program materials.

Parents and family

You are an important part of your student’s college experience—all our orientation programs include sessions just for you. You can also access resources through the “Resources” tab at the top of this page. As your student makes their New Student Orientation reservation, make sure they enter your email address so you can receive information regarding any orientation-related programming. They can even grant you guest access to the Orientation Portal. For in-person orientation programs, when making their reservation, students will also be asked to register the number of guests they are bringing and to identify any accessibility needs that their guests may need.

Guests of students attending virtual orientation are welcome to join the program concurrently with their student.
